Dieses Buch handelt von den vielfaltigen Arbeitswelten von Musiker_innen in der spaten Habsburgermonarchie. Anhand des 1896 gegrundeten Oesterreichisch-Ungarischen Musikerverbands detailgetreu analysiert, legt Fritz Trumpi damit eine umfangreiche Studie zum Zustand des Musikbetriebs im Fin de Siecle vor. Was den einen prickelndes Vergnugen, war den anderen strapaziose Arbeit: Musiker*innen hatten (auch) in der spaten Habsburgermonarchie oft ein schweres Los. Dieses zu verbessern, setzte sich der 1896 gegrundete Oesterreichisch-Ungarische Musikerverband zur Aufgabe. Dazu griff er monarchieweit und auf vielfaltige Weise in den Musikbetrieb ein. Er krempelte das Stellenvermittlungswesen um, betatigte sich als umtriebiger Orchestergrunder und Konzertorganisator, bemuhte sich um reichsweite Tarifregulierungen, bewirkte (unfreiwillig) die Bildung von Konkurrenzverbanden in Ungarn und Bohmen, kampfte erbittert gegen Militarkapellen und verbundete sich dazu mit Gruppierungen an den politischen Randern. Fritz Trumpis detailreiche Studie uber diese von der Musikgeschichte bisher kaum beachtete Organisation liefert zugleich eine profunde Analyse des Musikbetriebs im Fin de Siecle, welcher ohne sie wohl um einiges anders ausgesehen hatte.
