In Urgeschichte, Romerzeit und Fruhmittelalter wurden Grundlagen fur die Folgezeiten geschaffen. Im Hochmittelalter wuchs die Bevolkerung, neue Dorfer, neue Stadte, Kloster, Burgen und neue Lander entstanden - die heutigen Bundeslander der Republik. Durch die jahrhundertelange Herrschaft der Habsburger wurden diese Lander miteinander und mit vielen anderen europaischen Regionen - Italien, Spanien, Belgien, Ungarn, Bohmen, Polen, Slowenien, Kroatien - verbunden. Die Monarchie der Habsburger ermoglichte "ihren" Volkern trotz aller Kritik eine positive kulturelle und politische Entwicklung. Hingegen konnte die junge Republik Osterreich das Erbe des kriegsbedingten Mangels nicht bewaltigen, das nach dem Zerfall der Monarchie 1918 durch Bankenkrisen und politische Gegensatze verscharft wurde. Ein nationaler Konsens fehlte. Die Demokratie wich 1933 einer konservativen Diktatur. 1938 kam es zum vielfach bejubelten "Anschluss" an Hitlers Deutschland. Doch 1945 erhielt diese Republik eine "zweite Chance".
