Der funfte Band steht - eingebettet in die kirchlichen, gesellschaftlichen und staatspolitischen Gegebenheiten der Serenissima - im Zeichen Jacopo Tintorettos und seines kunstlerischen Umfelds. Ausgehend von Tizian und beeinflusst von Michelangelo sowie dem mittelitalienischen Manierismus entwickelt sich Jacopo, in Konkurrenz mit Paolo Veronese, nach und nach zum fuhrenden Reprasentanten der venezianischen Malerei. Das Hauptaugenmerk gilt den zahlreichen, bislang in der Forschung ausser Acht gelassenen Werkanalysen, denen - methodologisch auch durch die Gestalttheorie und Wahrnehmungspsychologie bzw. Komparatistik gestutzt - Uberlegungen zur Ikonographie, Komposition, Farbe, Licht und Bildzeit zu Grunde liegen. Einen besonderen Stellenwert hat die Untersuchung des Kolorits, zumal es sich hier um den in der Fachliteratur am meisten vernachlassigten Forschungsaspekt handelt. Aus all dem resultieren haufig neue hermeneutische Erkenntnisse und Antworten auf kunstlerische Qualitatsfragen sowie auch Vorschlage zur Losung nicht selten strittiger Datierungsprobleme. Damit geht auch die Frage einher, inwiefern Tintoretto bisweilen auch auf die Mitwirkung seiner Werkstatt, vor allem auf die Hilfe seines Sohns Domenico zuruckgegriffen hat. Tintorettos ausdrucksstarke, oft kuhn verkurzte Gestalten fugen sich zu rhythmisch bewegten Kompositionen, in denen sich grosse Tiefenwirkung mit flachenhafter Gebundenheit zu spannungsgeladener Gesamtwirkung verbindet. Anfangs malte Tintoretto in gluhenden, von Schwarz und braunen Tonen durchsetzten Farben. In der Spatzeit (vornehmlich in der Scuola di San Rocco) wurde die Farbe zu einer oft fahlbleichen Lichterscheinung, die das Stoffliche vergeistigt und das dramatische Geschehen ins Unwirkliche hebt.
