Der allgemeine Konsens ist der, dass Augustinus seine späteren Überzeugungen ca. 396 n.Chr. entwickelte, während er Ad Simplicianum, als Ergebnis seines Bibelstudiums, schrieb. Sein frühes Werk De libero arbitrio vertrat den Standpunkt der traditionellen Wahlfreiheit und widerlegte dabei den manichäischen Determinismus, aber seine anti-pelegianischen Schriften lehnen jede Autonomie des Menschen in Glaubensdingen ab. Kenneth M. Wilsons Studie ist die erste Arbeit, die die umfassende Methodik des systematischen und chronologischen Lesens von Augustinusʼ gesamten, noch vorhandenen Textkorpus (Werke, Predigten und Briefe von 386-430 n.Chr.) anwendet und dadurch die Entwicklung seines Freiheitsverständnisses untersucht. Der Autor analysiert Augustinusʼ spätere Theologie innerhalb der früheren philosophisch-religiösen Debatte um Willensfreiheit und Determinismus. Diese Untersuchung zeigt, dass Augustinus bis 412 n. Chr. auf dem traditionellen Standpunkt beharrte und dass seine theologische Wandlung hauptsächlich auf seinen vormals stoischen, neoplatonischen und manichäischen Einflüssen beruhte.
