Die sieben Kapitel stellen exegetische Untersuchungen dar, die mit den klassischen Methoden der historisch-kritischen Exegese sowie der rhetorischen und literarischen Kritik arbeiten. Als Ergebnis macht der Autor neue Vorschläge zur literarischen Komposition und Gattung des Briefes, zu seiner historischen Entstehung, zur Situation des Apostels bei der Abfassung und seinen Zukunftserwartungen, auch im Blick auf die Kirche.
