In seinem Bemühen, die Einheit der Heiligen Schrift zu finden, beschäftigte sich Brevard Childs (1923-2007) aus verschiedenen Perspektiven mit der Bibel und schrieb Einführungen zum Alten und Neuen Testament bevor er mit der Abfassung seiner biblischen Theologie einen Meilenstein setzte. Für ihn bedeutete der Kanon eine christliche Glaubensrichtlinie, obwohl die Wahrnehmung der 'Familienähnlichkeit' in der Entstehung des Kanons und die Wirkung auf das Kirchenleben genauso wie auf die Synagoge immer schwierig ist. Childs' Argument für eine Exegese der letzten vorliegenden Form erwuchs jedoch aus seiner Beschäftigung mit der Formgeschichte: Hermann Gunkel war ein entscheidender Vorgänger. Childs' Werk wurde viel diskutiert und im Gefolge von James Barrs Kritik oft missverstanden. Driver legt zum ersten Mal eine Gesamtdarstellung von Childs Theologie vor und berücksichtigt deren theoretischen Hintergrund ebenso wie ihre Umstrittenheit und ihre spätere Entwicklung. Dabei untersucht Driver sämtliche veröffentlichten Titel von Childs und zieht für seine Darstellung zudem bisher unveröffentliche Briefe und Schriften heran.
