Sigmund Mowinckel (1884-1965), der seit 1917 als Dozent, seit 1922 als Professor für das Alte Testament an der Universität Oslo tätig war, gilt als einer der bedeutendsten und einflussreichsten Alttestamentler des 20. Jahrhunderts. Sigurd Hjelde zeichnet zunächst seine Biographie nach, vor allem seine akademische Entwicklungsgeschichte bis hin zur Promotion (1916), und vermittelt im zweiten Teil des Buches Einblicke in verschiedene Aspekte seines großen Lebenswerks. Im Mittelpunkt stehen hier einige Schwerpunkte seiner Schriften zum Alten Testament, insbesondere sein Studium der biblischen Psalmen, das er - im Anschluss an die formgeschichtliche Methode Hermann Gunkels - auf Grund einer konsequent 'kultgeschichtlichen' Interpretation betrieben hat und das in der häufig diskutierten These von einem alljährlich stattfindenden Thronbesteigungsfest Jahwes im Alten Israel seinen markantesten Ausdruck fand. Daneben werden auch andere Aspekte seines Wirkens thematisiert, darunter sein Verhältnis zur Kirche und zum Christentum und seine Rolle als akademischer Lehrer, Bibelübersetzer und christlicher Verkündiger. Zugleich ordnet Sigurd Hjelde Mowinckel in die Geschichte der alttestamentlichen Forschung ein und beleuchtet sein Verhältnis zu den wichtigsten Kollegen in der skandinavischen Heimat sowie in der internationalen Forschungsgemeinschaft.
