Es gibt nicht viele Zeugnisse über Heiden, die vor der Ausbreitung des Christentums über Kenntnis der griechischen Bibel verfügten. Die Heiden, die später die christlichen Texte wahrnahmen, waren die ersten, die die Septuaginta ernsthaft studierten und die Lektüre - laut den überlieferten Texten - schwierig fanden. Unter denen, die auf die biblischen Texte reagierten, waren Celsos (II C.E.), Porphyrios (III C.E.) und Julian der Apostat (IV C.E.). Diese Autoren hofften, dass sie die neue Religion zum Scheitern bringen könnten, indem sie eines ihrer Fundamente, nämlich ihre Nutzung und Interpretation der Septuaginta, ins Wanken brächten. John Granger Cook untersucht die Texte dieser Heiden und zeigt ihre Bedeutung für das Verständnis der Interpretation der Septuaginta aus der Sicht griechisch-römischer Intellektueller. Er zeigt auch, daß das Interesse dieser Autoren nicht abstrakt war, da sie wussten, daß das Christentum eine ernste Bedrohung für einige ihrer wichtigsten Überzeugungen, ihr Selbstverständnis und ihre Lebensweise darstellte.
