Warum beschaftigen Menschen sich mit tierethischen Fragen? Und wie erklart sich, dass es insbesondere die akademische Tierethik zum Teil so einseitig und undifferenziert tut? Dieses Buch setzt sich kritisch-konstruktiv mit den gedanklichen Voraussetzungen bisheriger Bestimmungen des Mensch-Tier-Verhaltnisses auseinander. Es zeigt, dass die Komplexitat und Bedeutsamkeit mensch-tier-licher Begegnungen in der wissenschaftlichen Tierethik bislang aufgrund von egozentrischen Vorurteilen oft unterschatzt wurde und pladiert fur ein beziehungsorientiertes Umdenken. So wird in Auseinandersetzung mit Martin Heideggers seinsgeschichtlicher Metaphysikkritik und Emmanuel Levinas' phanomenologischer Alteritatsphilosophie die Verbindlichkeit des menschlichen Verantwortlichkeitserlebens gegenuber Tieren herausgestellt. Zudem wird die ethische Theologie Dietrich Bonhoeffers herangezogen, um Grundzuge einer (christlichen) Tierethik zu entwerfen, die auf ein gerechteres Miteinander, Fureinander und Gegeneinander von Menschen und Tieren jenseits von moralischen Simplifizierungen und starren Ontologien abzielt. Denn: Soziale Beziehungen zwischen Menschen und Tieren sind so zahlreich wie komplex und verlangen nach einer differenzierten Aufmerksamkeit.
