Diese begriffsgeschichtlich angelegte Arbeit verfolgt drei Ziele: zum einen in großem methodischen Bewusstsein für die Chancen und Tücken terminologischer Untersuchungen einen breiten Fächer von Bedeutungszuschreibungen zur arabischen visuellen Terminologie aufzuzeigen; zweitens auf der Grundlage einer detaillierten Analyse der einschlägigen Primärtexte auf die Signifikanz visueller Konzepte in der Diskussion verschiedener Bereiche der islamischen Kultur aufmerksam zu machen; schließlich aus einer transdisziplinären Perspektive das Zusammenspiel von (natur)philosophischen Vorstellungen vom Sehvorgang und visueller Semantik zu ergründen. Die Untersuchung umfasst neun Ausschnitte der islamischen Kulturgeschichte in einem Zeitraum von ca. 650 bis 1600, darunter Analysen zur visuellen Terminologie im Koran, in der arabischen Lexikographie, in der Optik, im fiqh, in der Alltagsmagie und in der kalligraphietheoretischen Literatur der Safawidenzeit. Hauptergebnis dieser Arbeit ist der enge Zusammenhang von Alltagsphysik, Literatur und Naturphilosophie, der sich insbesondere in Vorstellungen von der Materialität des Sehvorgangs, aber auch in der Beantwortung der Frage nach dem konkreten Sitz der Erkenntnis manifestiert.
