Die Hochschulwelt befindet sich im Umbruch. Gesellschaftliche Veränderungen wie Individualisierung, Globalisierung und Mobilität, der „Shift from Teaching to Learning", die Hinwendung zur kompetenzorientierten Lehre sowie die Entwicklung der Hochschulorganisation und -verwaltung zu mehr Autonomie, Effektivität und Effizienz („New Public Management") erfordern eine Weiterentwicklung der Handlungskoordination. Als eine mögliche Antwort der Hochschulgestaltenden zur Umsetzung der kompetenzorientierten Lehre ist die Studierendenorientierung zu sehen. Diese Entwicklung lässt sich aus der Perspektive der „Educational Governance" beschreiben. Die Dimensionen umfassen Instrumente und Kompetenzbeschreibungen der beteiligten Akteurinnen und Akteure, müssen jedoch um die Dimensionen der kompetenzorientierten Lehre und der Studierendenorientierung erweitert werden, will man dem Auftrag für Bildungsinstitutionen gerecht werden. Mit der vorliegenden Analyse wird eine theoretisch fundierte Basis für die notwendigen Veränderungsprozesse der Hochschulsteuerung geschaffen. Die Veränderungsdimensionen werden durch Fallanalysen anschaulich darlegt und zeigen - nicht nur für Hochschulen - übertragbare Ansätze zur Erreichung einer studierendenorientierten Hochschule.
