Als Herzog Bernhard von Weimar (1604-1639) Ende 1638 die Festung Breisach einnahm, schien es eine Wende im Dreißigjährigen Krieg zu geben. Ihm war ein entscheidender Schlag gegen Habsburg gelungen. Der Herzog selbst wollte sich hier am Rhein und im Elsass eine Territorialherrschaft aufbauen. Bernhard, einer der wichtigsten Militärunternehmer dieses Krieges, agierte zwischen und mit den großen Mächten: Dänemark, Schweden, Frankreich, stets gegen den Kaiser. Ihm ging es um Herrschaft, finanziellen Gewinn, Ruhm, den lutherischen Glauben und die reichsständischen Freiheiten. Die Biographie zeigt den Heerführer und Politiker Bernhard, sie fragt nach der Finanzierung seines Krieges und der Versorgung seiner Weimarischen Armee, nicht zuletzt durch die Eidgenossenschaft, wie nach seinen medialen Strategien. Die ambitionierten Bündnisprojekte des Herzogs, geplante Ehen und seine Verbindungen zu Zeitgenossen wie Hugo Grotius, der Königin von Böhmen oder Herzog Henri de Rohan, dem Hugenottenführer, lassen politische und diplomatische Beziehungsnetze im protestantischen Europa sichtbar werden.
