Lange bleiben das Christentum die Religion der überwiegenden Mehrheit der Bevölkerung und Griechisch die am häufigsten geschriebene Verwaltungssprache. Der Band beinhaltet die kommentierte Edition und Übersetzung von 62 griechischen Papyrustexten aus dem Senouthios-Archiv. Diese Briefe zwischen hohen Beamten des Hermopolites aus den allerersten Jahren nach der arabischen Eroberung Ägyptens stellen das bedeutendste dokumentarische Quellenkonvolut dieses historischen Wendepunktes dar. Sie veranschaulichen das Zusammenleben und die Interaktion zwischen ex-byzantinischer Verwaltung, ägyptischer Bevölkerung und Arabern und wie aus dieser Interaktion eine neue institutionelle, soziale, kulturelle und wirtschaftliche Realität entsteht. Durch die Bereitstellung neuer direkter und ungefilterter Informationen stellt der Band einen wesentlichen Beitrag zu einem besseren Verständnis und einer fundierten Rekonstruktion dieser historischen Übergangsphase dar.
