This monograph provides a detailed analysis of the microparametric variation of passive and middle voice constructions in Norwegian and Swedish. To capture generalizatons observed in these data, this volume adopts a novel theoretical approach, where the size of the exponents used to lexicalize the syntactic constituents actively determines aspects of linguistic variation. To capture generalizatons observed in these data, this volume adopts a novel theoretical approach, where the size of the exponents used to lexicalize the syntactic constituents actively determines aspects of linguistic variation. This exponency-based system results in a more parsimonious and conceptually appealing analysis where voice distinctions are not lexically specified. The morphosyntactic and semantic differences that exist between these structures in Swedish and Norwegian directly follow from the linguistic content (i.e., mood and aspectual distinctions) that each exponent identifies in each language.
