Mit einem Anteil von knapp 23 % war Erdgas 2016 nach dem Mineralöl der zweitwichtigste Primärenergieträger in Deutschland und übertraf damit noch den Gesamtwert der Kohle. Dennoch ist Erdgas bislang von der wirtschafts- und unternehmenshistorischen Forschung völlig unbeachtet geblieben. Die vorliegende Studie untersucht die Geschichte der Ruhrgas AG zwischen ihrer Gründung Mitte der 1920er Jahre und ihrer Integration in den E.ON-Konzern 2013. Entstanden im Kokereigaszeitalter zum Aufbau einer deutschlandweiten Ferngasversorgung, erreichte die Ruhrgas dieses Ziel nach Beginn des Erdgaszeitalters in den 1960er Jahren. Nach der langjährigen Marktführerschaft in Deutschland wurde das Unternehmen nun zur zentralen europäischen Größe. Es initiierte den europäischen Erdgasverbund und trug mit dem Import sowjetischen Erdgases maßgeblich zur Entspannungspolitik im Ost-West-Konflikt bei. Damit galt die Ruhrgas bis zum systematischen Bedeutungsverlust durch die Energiemarktliberalisierung der vergangenen zwei Jahrzehnte als Synonym für die Gaswirtschaft überhaupt. Das Buch beleuchtet erstmals eingehend die Geschichte des Unternehmens und der Branche im 20. und 21. Jahrhundert und schließt damit ein bedeutendes Desiderat. Review Insgesamt bietet die Geschichte der Ruhrgas sicherlich weit mehr als eine konventionelle Unternehmensgeschichte, die das Unternehmen nur aus sich selbst heraus erklären will, denn erstens verbindet Bleidick die Innenperspektive des Unternehmens immer wieder mit größeren ökonomischen und energiepolitischen Zusammenhängen und zweitens werden hier in weiten Teilen die Strukturen der gesamten deutschen Gasbranche nachgezeichnet, weshalb das Buch nicht nur für Unternehmens- und Wirtschaftshistoriker/innen, sondern auch für energiehistorische Forschungen zum 20. Er hat ein substantielles Grundlagenwerk vorgelegt, das zahlreiche Anknüpfungspunkte für Forschungen jenseits der Wirtschafts- und Unternehmensgeschichte bietet.
