Product Description Die Konfession deutscher Orientalisten rückt zunehmend in den Fokus fachgeschichtlicher Forschung. Dabei bietet das Spannungsfeld von Orientalismus und Antisemitismus nicht nur Ansatzpunkte bei Gelehrtenbiografien jüdischer Wissenschaftler. Die besonderen gesellschaftspolitischen Rahmenbedingungen des „kulturkämpferischen" Zweiten Deutschen Kaiserreichs lenken den Blick auch auf Konflikte zwischen den christlichen Konfessionen. Der Orientalistik kommt durch ihren Forschungsgegenstand dabei eine Schlüsselrolle zu. Die Ägyptologie in Deutschland hat sich, anders als ihre Nachbardisziplin der Assyriologie, nicht in den „Babel-Bibel-Streit" verwickeln lassen. Weitgehend staatlich finanziert, mussten deutsche Ägyptologen, anders als ihre angelsächsischen Kollegen, auch nicht „biblische" Themen aufgreifen, um private Förderer zu gewinnen. Dennoch hatte die Konfession unmittelbaren Einfluss auf Karrieren und Wissenschaftspolitik. Die vorliegende Studie geht diesem Einfluss anhand ausgesuchter Fallbeispiele auf den Grund.
