Im Zeitraum zwischen den beiden apostrophierten konfessionellen Zeitaltern (1648-1800) entstanden auf dem Boden des Alten Reichs sich voneinander abgrenzende Konfessionskulturen. Eine Analyse von Reiseberichten aus dem exemplarisch gewählten Gebiet des Mittelrheintals gibt Einblick in die Genese wechselseitiger Wahrnehmungs- und Bewertungsmuster dieser Kulturen und die damit verbundenen Prozesse von Selbstvergewisserung und -darstellung. Review Christoph Nebgen hat sich vorgenommen, das exemplarische Beispiel der Rheinreise zu nutzen, um eine erste systematische, auf ein bestimmtes Territorium eingegrenzte Erforschung konfessioneller Differenzerfahrungen in Reiseberichten der Frühen Neuzeit vorzunehmen. Dies ist ihm in dieser umfangreichen, gut strukturierten und zuweilen sehr amüsanten exemplarischen Studie gelungen, die ganz gewiss die Basis für weitere Arbeiten, die diesem Ansatz folgen werden, darstellen wird.
