Mit seinem Roman Jugend ohne Gott, der im Oktober 1937 im Amsterdamer Exil-Verlag Allert de Lange erschienen ist, etablierte sich Horváth nicht nur als antifaschistischer Autor, sondern erlangte auch internationale Reputation. Der Roman wurde bald nach dem Erscheinen in zahlreiche Sprachen übersetzt. Der vorliegende Band zeigt die Genese des Buches aus seinen beiden Vorarbeiten. Einerseits ist dies das Schülerdrama Der Lenz ist da! von 1934, das an Wedekinds Frühlings Erwachen anknüpft und bereits ein Jungen-Zeltlager, ein Mädchen-Ferienlager und eine Diebesbande enthält. Bei der zweiten Vorarbeit, die als unmittelbare Vorstufe des Romans angesehen werden muss und auf das Jahr 1936 datiert, handelt es sich um das Romanprojekt Auf der Suche nach den Idealen der Menschheit, in dem Horváth die Lehrerfigur entwickelt. Das genetische Konvolut zu dem Werkprojekt ist aufgrund von Überlieferungsverlusten äußerst schmal. Der Band enthält die beiden einzigen überlieferten und bis dato unbekannten Blätter aus der eigentlichen Werkgenese des Romans. Mangels eines Manuskripts aus Horváths Hand basiert die Endfassung des Romans auf dem Erstdruck. So wird der heute im (Schul-)Kanon fest verankerte Roman ohne die sinnstörenden Fehler späterer Ausgaben lesbar.
