Gegenstand der Untersuchung sind Gipsabgüsse und Kopien antiker Plastik, die nach dem Ende des Siebenjährigen Krieges in Mitteldeutschland in zuvor nicht gekannter Menge hergestellt und verkauft wurden. Sie bildeten die Voraussetzungen für eine weite Verbreitung vorbildhafter Antiken. Die Arbeit bildet eine Bestandsaufnahme der Produkte und Werbemaßnahmen von Künstlern, Manufakturen und Händlern. Rekonstruiert werden der anfänglich begrenzte Formenvorrat und seine sukzessive Erweiterung. Durch die Abformung ausgewählter Antiken 1782 avancierte die Dresdner Sammlung zum regionalen Paradigma. Diese Gipsabgüsse bildeten die Vorlagen für Antikenkopien in sog. Alternativmaterialien wie speziell behandeltem Papiermaché, Terrakotta, Eisen sowie anstehenden Erden und Gesteinen. Es wird ein Einblick in das komplexe Bezugssystem und die Mechanismen der Herstellung und des Vertriebs von Abgüssen und Antikenkopien ermöglicht. Die für die Epoche konstituierende Auseinandersetzung mit antiker Kunst wird unter den Rahmenbedingungen des technisch Machbaren ausgeführt. So entsteht ein breites Fundament für das Verständnis dieser spezifischen Form der Transformation von Antike im 18. Jahrhundert.
