Die Studie befasst sich mit Heines komplexer Byron-Rezeption und zeigt, dass der Weltschmerz als bisher dominantes Paradigma des Vergleichs beider Autoren zu kurz greift. Anhand von umfangreichen Textanalysen wird eine Poetik eingreifender Kunst bei Byron und Heine herausgearbeitet, die beide Autoren zwischen 1815 und 1830, also in der Schwellenzeit zwischen Romantik und Realismus, entwickeln. Diese performative Poetik lässt nicht nur Heines Byron-Rezeption in einem neuen Licht erscheinen, sondern präzisiert auch das Verhältnis beider zu (früh )romantischen Positionen.
