Dieses zweibändige Werk bietet erstmals eine umfassende Interpretation der Philosophie Marc Aurels. Anders als die wenigen bestehenden Interpretationen, die sich entweder auf Form oder Inhalt konzentrieren, werden hier sowohl formale Aspekte als auch das ganze Spektrum der Themen und Argumente dargestellt. Dabei wird die These zugrunde gelegt, dass Marc Aurel mit den Selbstbetrachtungen den ersten erhaltenen Selbstdialog geschrieben hat. Die Abfassung des vorrangig selbstdialogischen Textes kann zugleich auch stoische philosophische Praxis sein. Band 1 untersucht allgemeine formale Charakteristika und ihre philosophische Bedeutung wie die Sprachwahl, den Aufbau des Textes, das formal besondere erste Buch, literarische Gattungselemente, stilistische und rhetorische Aspekte und besonders intensiv den Charakter der Selbstbetrachtungen als Selbstdialog. Band 2 untersucht in Anlehnung an die stoische Teilung der Philosophie die Positionen, Begriffe und Argumente. Analysiert werden daher besonders Marc Aurels Auffassung von der Physik, dem richtigen Vernunftgebrauch und seine Ethik. Die bislang eher vernachlässigten sozialen und politischen Aspekte werden dabei in den Kontext seiner stoischen Philosophie gesetzt.
