Das Handbuch trägt diesen Gegebenheiten erstmals Rechnung, indem es mehr als 50 Orte aus dem deutschen Sprachraum der Frühen Neuzeit in ihren kulturellen Zentralitätsfunktionen vorstellt. In einem einheitlichen Artikelaufbau werden die strukturellen Faktoren, die Institutionen des kulturellen Lebens, wichtige Personen, Gruppen oder Sozietäten sowie Medien und Korrespondenznetze dargelegt. Des Weiteren wird die Selbst- und Außenwahrnehmung durch Zeitgenossen sowie die Rezeption durch die Nachwelt berücksichtigt. Abgeschlossen wird jeder Eintrag mit knappen Informationen zur örtlichen Überlieferungs- und Archivsituation sowie mit einer Auswahlbibliographie. Mit dem Handbuch wird ein neuartiges, der historischen Kulturraumforschung verpflichtetes Nachschlagewerk zur Kulturgeschichte des Alten Reichs in der Frühen Neuzeit vorgelegt.
