Das Christentum sagt, dass Jesus Christus sowohl wahrer Mensch als auch wahrer Gott in einer Person war. Doch wie kann das genauer gedacht werden? Um diese Frage zu beantworten, rekonstruiert das Buch umfassend das Denken Georg Wilhelm Friedrich Hegels und damit einen der einflussreichsten und interessantesten Denker der Moderne. Hegels neu edierte religionsphilosophischen Vorlesungen werden dazu ebenso ausgelegt wie die entsprechenden Texte der Enzyklopädie. Vor allem aber wird auch der logische Hintergrund dieser Fragestellung bedacht und dafür erstmals ausführlich die „absolute Idee" aus Hegels Wissenschaft der Logik exegetisiert. Die „absolute Idee" ist durch absolute Vermittlung geprägt, und diese logische Figur bewirkt in der Realphilosophie die Aufhebung der Religion in die Philosophie: Die wahre Einheit Gottes und des Menschen vollzieht sich laut Hegel in der Philosophie, nicht in der religiösen Praxis. Dieses Resultat Hegels wird anschließend aus theologischer wie aus philosophischer Perspektive kritisiert und der Ansatz eines eigenen Vorschlags skizziert. Zuletzt wird der explizite und implizite Umgang mit Hegel in der gegenwärtigen Theologie untersucht.
