Die Arbeit wendet sich erstmals in überblicksartiger Form den bis zu 40 m langen Großbootshäusern zu, die im Zeitraum vom 1.-15. Jh. insbesondere in Norwegen weit verbreitet waren. Drei Aspekte stehen im Mittelpunkt der Betrachtungen: die zusammenfassende Erörterung der Ausgrabungen von Großbootshäusern, die Nutzung der Großbootshäuser zur Ermittlung küstennaher Herrschaftssitze sowie die Diskussion der Schifffahrtsgeschichte.
