Welche Rolle spielten die sogenannte "Reichskrise" des 3. und die Veränderungen des 4. Jahrhunderts für christliche Geschichtsdeutung? Schrieb der erste christliche Historiker, Eusebius von Caesarea, lediglich eine "Materialsammlung", oder orientierte er sich an zeitgenössischen Standards wissenschaftlicher Geschichtsschreibung? Antworten auf diese und andere in der Forschung kontrovers debattierten Fragen zur antiken christlichen Geschichtsschreibung finden sich in dieser Untersuchung. Die Studie geht auf die fünfte "Hans-Lietzmann-Vorlesung" zurück, die am 16. November 1999 an der Friedrich-Schiller-Universität Jena gehalten wurde.
