Der Passauer Vertrag beendete den sogenannten "Fürstenaufstand", in dem die wichtigsten evangelischen Fürsten Deutschlands gegen Kaiser Karl V. in den Krieg zogen und für die Länder evangelischer Konfession einen dauerhaften und rechtlich abgesicherten Frieden einforderten. Dazu dienten Verhandlungen der wichtigsten Reichsfürsten in Passau, deren Verhandlungsergebnis im Passauer Vertrag fixiert wurde. Der Vertrag ist das wichtigste Dokument in der Vorgeschichte des Augsburger Religionsfriedens von 1555 und liegt bislang in keiner wissenschaftlichen Edition vor. Bei der Vorbereitung der hier vorgelegten Edition wurde das dritte Original sowie eine vorangehende Vertragsnotel entdeckt, die neues Licht auf den Vertragsabschluß werfen. Die Protokolle sind synoptisch ediert. Die Einleitung skizziert das Zustandekommen und die Bedeutung des Vertrages.
