Description

Planned as a novella, as a cheerful counterpart to the ›Death in Venice‹, one of the great novels of classical modernism was created with the ›Zauberberg‹. A short visit to a Davos sanatorium becomes a seven-year stay for the protagonist Hans Castorp, the spa town becomes the stage for the European state before the First World War. Begun in July 1913, interrupted during the war by essayistic works, especially by the ›contemplations of a non-political‹, the novel could be completed and published in 1924. Text basis of this volume is the 1924 first edition. The commentary volume on the ›Zauberberg‹ contains detailed essays on the history of origin and reception as well as on the text and source location. In the job commentary, the dense fabric of philosophical, historical, intellectual historical, and medical source interpretations that constitutes the unique texture of this novel is explained in detail alongside literary history and historical backgrounds.
