Forty years after its appearance, Moshe Kahn has succeeded in transferring the long considered untranslatable novel into another language for the first time. He had made it his life task to find a German equivalent for Sicilian Italian with its image-rich and metaphor-rich dialects and earthy phonemes, which makes the great throw of the novel, its linguistic finesse and its wide allusions come alive. A brilliant deed.
