Georg Philipp Harsdörffers Anthologien "Der Grosse Schau-Platz jämmerlicher Mord-Geschichte" und "Der Grosse Schauplatz Lust- und Lehrreicher Geschichte" sammeln Erzählmaterial aus der romanischen Novellentradition und bereiten diese für ein deutschsprachiges Publikum auf. Die rund 400 Erzählungen handeln von Intrigen, sexuellen Verbrechen, von Verrat und Mord, von Untreue und Feigheit, aber auch von Späßen, von Versöhnungen und Kuriositäten. Sie zählen zu den großen Erfolgen auf dem deutschen Buchmarkt der zweiten Hälfte des 17. Jahrhunderts. Stefan Manns fragt nach den Gründen für diesen Erfolg und sucht sie in den Erzählstrukturen selbst. Er verortet die Erzählsammlungen innerhalb von Harsdörffers literarischem Werk, das programmatisch ganz im Zeichen barocker Bildungsarbeit steht. So geht es in allen diesen Texten um das Sammeln, Verwalten und Kombinieren von Wissenspartikeln nach topischer Maßgabe. Ziel des Kompilierens und Kombinierens ist die Ausbildung von Gesprächskompetenz, die als sozialkulturelle Schlüsselfertigkeit gesehen wird. Die "Schauplätze" werden dementsprechend als Vorratssammlungen argumentativ relevanter Topoi gelesen, deren kombinatorische Belastbarkeit im Erzählen geprüft wird. Sie loten insofern die Grenzen aus, in denen ein der Kombinatorik verpflichtetes Erzählen (noch) möglich ist. In paradigmatischen Erzählanalysen entschlüsselt Stefan Manns die diesem Erzählen zugrunde liegenden narrativen Verfahren - von der Präsentation einer zentralen Geschichte bis hin zur traktathaften Wissensvermittlung. Die Studie schließt eine Lücke in der Harsdörffer-Forschung, indem sie erstmals sein Erzählen systematisch beschreibt, und leistet gleichzeitig Pionierarbeit für eine erzähltheoretisch orientierte Frühneuzeitforschung.
