Dieses altnordisch-deutsche Wörterbuch, das zunächst in zwei Teilen 1965 (A-L) und 1968 (M-Ø) als Band 111 der Philologisch-historischen Klasse der Sitzungsberichte der Sächsischen Akademie der Wissenschaften zu Leipzig erschienen ist, gehört nun bereits seit Jahrzehnten zu den Standardwerken der Nordistik und ist bis heute durch kein anderes Nachschlagewerk zu ersetzen. Den Kern der Sammlung bildet der Wortschatz der Isländersagas und der klassischen Werke der isländisch-norwegischen Geschichtsschreibung, von Aris Isländerbuch und der Sverrissaga bis zur Sturlungasaga; er wird ergänzt durch das Sprachgut der Knytlingasaga und solcher geschichtlicher Erzählungen wie die Jomsvikingasaga, die Orkneyingasaga, die Færeyingasaga und die Grönlandsagas. Eine dritte Gruppe der Quellen bilden die beiden großen Heldenromane des Nordens, Völsungasaga und Thidrekssaga, samt den wichtigsten Fornaldarsagas. Von den lehrhaften und ästhetischen Schriften ist nur die Snorra-Edda berücksichtigt worden. Als zeitliche Grenze für die aufzunehmenden Werke wurde im allgemeinen das Jahr 1300 genommen. Ein besonderer Vorzug von Baetkes Wörterbuch besteht darin, dass den für die altnordische Sprache besonders charakteristischen Ausdrucksformen breiter Raum gegeben wird, hierzu gehören neben den für bestimmte Wörter typischen Wortverbindungen vor allem die unpersönlichen Ausdrücke und die zahlreichen präpositionalen Fügungen. Die wichtigste Aufgabe seines Wörterbuchs sah Baetke darin, die Bedeutung der Wörter und Wortgruppen möglichst treffend und eindeutig anzugeben. Andere Vermerke sind nur insoweit angebracht, als sie dazu dienen, die Benutzung zu erleichtern. Grammatikalische Angaben und Hinweise auf Wortformen sind auf das Notwendigste beschränkt, auf etymologische Erklärungen wird hier verzichtet.
