1756 befahl Friedrich der Große die Besetzung des Kurfürstentums Sachsen. Der damit ausgelöste Siebenjährige Krieg festigte Preußens Anspruch als europäische Großmacht und begründete den österreichisch-preußischen Dualismus. Zugleich stärkte er Russlands Status als europäische Großmacht. Der Siebenjährige Krieg war aber auch der "Erste Weltkrieg". Schon 1755 hatte der Streit um Grenzverläufe in Nordamerika zum offenen Krieg zwischen England und Frankreich geführt, an dessen Ende mit dem britischen Sieg über Frankreich und Spanien die Grundlage des britischen "Empire" gelegt wurde. England vertrieb Frankreich aus Nordamerika, gewann Kanada und legte den Grundstein zur späteren Eroberung Indiens. Der Band dokumentiert den Siebenjährigen Krieg als "Weltkrieg", da er auch die Beziehungen Europas zur nichteuropäischen Welt veränderte. In den Beiträgen werden die weltgeschichtliche Bedeutung, die globale Dimension, unmittelbare und langfristige Wirkungen und Wahrnehmungen des Siebenjährigen Krieges sowie Krieg und Kriegführung im Zeitalter der Aufklärung diskutiert. Review "Der Sammelband enthält zahlreiche anregende Einzelbeiträge, zumeist auf hohem Niveau.
