Im abruzzischen Kloster San Clemente a Casauria fand von 1172 bis etwa 1200 eine umfassende Text- und Bildproduktion statt. Sie zeigt, dass Geschichtsüberlieferung und damit die Erinnerung an die Vergangenheit im Hochmittelalter nicht ausschließlich Angelegenheit von Chroniken war. Sämtliche auf die Vergangenheit der eigenen Institution bezogenen Textgattungen, wie Klosterchronik, Viten oder Translationsberichte des Klosterpatrons, originale Urkunden ebenso wie imitative Fälschungen und eine umfassende Kopialüberlieferung, stehen dort in unmittelbarem Zusammenhang mit einer enormen Bildproduktion, in der die wichtigsten Gattungen der mittel- und süditalienischen Kunst des 12. Jahrhunderts vertreten sind. Während vergleichbare Zeugnisse vereinzelt aus vielen Klöstern und Bischofssitzen Mittelitaliens erhalten geblieben sind, ist der unter dem Reformabt Leonas (1155-1182) und seinem Nachfolger Johel (1182-nach 1191) geschaffene Bestand Casaurias in seiner heutigen Überlieferungsdichte sowohl quantitativ als auch qualitativ einmalig. Weder die kunstgeschichtliche noch die historische Forschung haben bislang diese Vielfalt von Bildern und Texten in einer monographischen Gesamtbetrachtung genutzt. Markus Späth begreift dagegen die differenzierte Überlieferungslage in Casauria als Chance, jenseits von Fach- und Gattungsgrenzen die Strukturen historischer Erinnerung und deren vielfältiger Verflechtung in fast zeitgleich entstandenen Zeugnissen eines hochmittelalterlichen Klosters transdisziplinär zu untersuchen.
