Cet ouvrage porte principalement sur l'engagement antifasciste d'André Malraux, sur le développement de sa pensée politique, et la manière dont elle se traduit en actes. En fait, à partir de 1933 et jusqu'aux années de la drôle de guerre, Malraux s'est engagé corps et âme dans la lutte antifasciste - anti-hitlérienne, anti-franquiste - à tel point qu'il en vint à incarner, surtout aux yeux de ses contemporains, l'engagement politique de l'écrivain. A partir de 1934 les démarches que Malraux a inlassablement poursuivies dans sa défense des libertés démocratiques étaient accompagnées d'une analyse, de plus en plus subtile, des caractéristiques du fascisme. Le propos de l'auteur, dans cette bio-bibliographie, consiste à examiner un seul panneau de l'immense polyptique qu'est l'oeuvre si varié de Malraux: les centaines d'écrits et de déclarations où il prend position, de 1933 à 1939, contre la « marée brune » du fascisme.
