En 1918, après un demi-siècle de lutte suffragiste et au terme de quatre années de guerre, les femmes britanniques furent parmi les premières en Europe à obtenir le droit de voter. Longtemps négligées par les historiens, les vingt années qui suivirent représentent une conclusion indispensable à toute étude sur le suffrage féminin. Dans quelle mesure, en effet, le droit de vote des femmes bouleversa-t-il le paysage politique britannique ? Cet ouvrage, riche de nombreuses sources primaires, parmi lesquelles un grand nombre encore inexploitées, se propose de répondre à cette question en analysant la réaction de la classe politique à l'arrivée de 8,5 millions de femmes dans l'électorat. Il étudie notamment le comportement électoral des nouvelles électrices ainsi que les différentes tentatives, de la part des organisations féministes, de créer une nouvelle force électorale. Parce que, plus qu'un symbole, le droit de vote avait représenté, aux yeux des suffragistes, un moyen de combattre les nombreuses inégalités légales, économiques et sociales, l'auteur examine enfin si l'accession des femmes à la citoyenneté politique répondit à ces attentes en permettant d'autres réformes et, de manière plus générale, une amélioration de la condition féminine.
