Diese Arbeit gewann 2007 den Preis der Theologischen Fakultät der Universität Basel. Was bedeutet Zions Weiblichkeit in der jüdischen Religions- und Literaturgeschichte? Die biblische Zionsgestalt ist schon im Midrasch des Hohenliedes die Geliebte, an der sich Gott freut, sie ist aber auch die verlassene Mutter, die Stadt Jerusalem, wie im biblischen Klagelied. Die hebräische synagogale Poesie widerspiegelt seit Jannai (6. Jh.) und über Abraham Ibn Ezra (11./12. Jh.) hinaus in der weiblichen Zionsgestalt das wechselnde Selbstverständnis des jüdischen Volkes. Der literarischen Palette von Frauenmetaphern Zions widmet sich nun erstmalig diese motivgeschichtliche Untersuchung. Der neue Ansatz der Autorin zeigt, wie die jüdischen Hofpoeten, u.a. Shlomo Ibn Gabirol, Moshe Ibn Ezra und Jehuda Halevi das traditionelle Frauenbild Zions mit der Figur der schönen Geliebten aus der arabo-hebräischen Liebesdichtung verbinden, ihr aber auch die männliche Rolle des sehnsüchtigen Freundes / Schützlings aus der Panegyrik geben. Welche Funktion hat diese kontroverse Doppelrolle Zions? Die Problemstellung ist das Exil: Irrt Zion, die Geliebte Gottes, ziellos umher oder sucht sie nach Gott und ihrer Heimat? Die Autorin bietet nicht nur ein literarisches Panorama hebräischer Poesie, sondern rückt die bedeutendste Literaturgattung des Mittelalters in ein neues Licht. Die beigelegte CD-ROM enthält 145 übersetzte und kommentierte Gedichte klassischer Piyyutdichter des Landes Israel und der Dichter des Goldenen Zeitalters von al-Andalus. Davon werden rund ein Drittel auch in der hebräischen Originalversion wiedergegeben.
