Las primeras manifestaciones culturales nos enseñan que la historia de la humanidad es la historia de un continuo desplazamiento, por lo que no es de extrañar que cuando el hombre empieza a sentir la necesidad de plasmar sus vivencias y experiencias, el viaje constituya para él un tema insoslayable. Atendiendo sólo al espacio concreto de la escritura, se constata, en efecto, quedes de tiempos inmemoriales – ya sea constituyendo el asunto principal o bien como hilo conductor, estructura, símbolo o fuente de inspiración – este tópico está presente en una pluralidad heterogénea de textos de diferentes culturas. En esta obra colectiva se abordan distintas cuestiones relacionadas con el tema del viaje, su plasmación escrita y su significado, a lo largo de la historia y en distintas áreas geográficas y culturales, desde una perspectiva interdisciplinar (lingüística, literatura, historia de la ciencia, arte, geografía…). De esta forma, y más allá de la oposición entre viaje real e imaginario y de sus diversos modos de representación, los artículos aquí reunidos plantean asuntos relativos a los aspectos genéricos y formales de los textos originales o de sus traducciones, del mismo modo que analizan su adaptación, difusión y recepción.
