Scheinbar überraschend ist Spiritualität seit Beginn des 21. Jahrhunderts zu einem Thema der modernen Medizin und der Universitätswissenschaft geworden. Diese Entwicklung ist aber nicht erstaunlich, wenn man die zunehmend erkannte spirituelle Not vieler Schwerkranker und den enormen spirituellen Hunger berücksichtigt, der sich nach einer lang dauernden Phase rein naturwissenschaftlich geprägter Kulturentwicklung in der Bevölkerung bemerkbar macht. An der Universität Bern wurde deshalb eine interdisziplinäre Vorlesungsreihe zum Thema Spiritualität in der modernen Medizin veranstaltet, deren Beiträge hier veröffentlicht werden. Es war einerseits das Anliegen, das Thema Spiritualität in einer für die heutige Situation typischen multikulturellen Perspektive zur Geltung zu bringen. Andererseits wurde deutlich gemacht, dass Spiritualität heute nicht mehr bloss eine Angelegenheit von Glauben und weltanschaulicher oder religiöser Lehre, sondern zunehmend von persönlicher empirischer Erfahrung ist. Durch die denkerische Verarbeitung dieser Erfahrung kann ebenso eine im Praktischen anwendbare Wissenschaft des Spirituellen entwickelt werden, wie das seit Beginn des naturwissenschaftlichen Zeitalters für die Erfahrung des Materiellen der Fall ist. Das Abendland ist fähig, die Wissenschaft auch auf die geistige Realität auszuweiten und muss nicht bloss auf vorwissenschaftliche oder orientalische Formen der Spiritualität zurückgreifen.
