Friedrich Gorenstein (1932-2002) est l'un des rares écrivains de l'époque soviétique à avoir traité la question de l'antisémitisme avec tant de force, à une époque où le problème de la place du Juif en URSS était un sujet encore tabou chez les écrivains. Ses oeuvres majeures (Le Rachat, La Place, Psaume, Compagnons de route) n'ont pas été publiées en Russie avant la perestroïka. Comment ce romancier et essayiste perçoit-il les «thèmes juifs», en particulier le judaïsme russe, le refus de l'«autre», la haine de soi et l'antisémitisme, aussi bien dans la Russie impériale puis soviétique qu'en Allemagne, où l'écrivain a émigré en 1980? Quel est son regard sur la Russie et le «peuple russe», secoués par les catastrophes du XXe siècle? L'auteur analyse les questions soulevées par l'oeuvre de Gorenstein, qui portent avant tout sur la Russie et son histoire, mais qui nous font également accéder au coeur de l'histoire européenne du XXe siècle. L'attrait et le rejet de l'assimilation, la réflexion sur les totalitarismes et leurs origines, la difficile question de l'universalité des valeurs, tels sont les thèmes et les problèmes, situés au centre de l'oeuvre de Gorenstein.
