Description

This volume offers arguments from eastern and western philosophical traditions to enrich and diversify our present conceptions of knowledge. The contributors extend contemporary Western epistemology in novel directions, through investigating and questioning entrenched conceptions of knowledge. The cross-tradition engagement with the neurosciences, psychology, and anthropological studies is an important feature of the volume’s methodological approach that helps broaden our epistemological horizons. It presents a collection of perspectives on epistemic agency by engaging philosophical traditions east and west, including Japanese, Buddhist, Confucian, Daoist, and Anglo-analytic.   Review “Contemporary epistemology in the analytical tradition has recently been given a shot in the arm by engaging with key themes from Eastern philosophical traditions. This excellent volume is the very first to offer a fascinating overview of the cutting-edge work being done in this regard. In particular, the volume explores how Eastern and Western perspectives can combine to give us an insight into the burgeoning field of extended epistemology, which examines the epistemological ramifications of the extended cognition program in contemporary cognitive science."  Duncan Pritchard, Distinguished Professor of Philosophy, University of California, Irvine, USA "Knowers and Knowledge is a valuable interdisciplinary and intercultural work that offers new directions in the contemporary development of epistemological debates on a global scale. Drawing on various Asian philosophical traditions, this book also revalues and renews the idea of bodily knowledge, which has received far too little attention in Western epistemology." Jana S. Rošker, Professor of Sinology at the Department of Asian Studies, University of Ljubljana, Slovenia From the Back Cover This volume offers arguments from eastern and western philosophical traditions to enrich and diversify our present conceptions of knowledge.
