Description

This book focuses on the intertwined relationships between globalisation, nation-building, education, and reform as manifested throughout the modern history of Brunei Darussalam, an Islamic monarchy located on the island of Borneo in Southeast Asia. It is the first book dedicated to the examination of Brunei’s education system, schooling, teacher education, and society in close connection with the national philosophy Melayu Islam Beraja (MIB) or Malay Islamic Monarchy. The authors provide a historical understanding of the country’s education and tell Brunei’s story of educational reform and change in its own language, narratives, accounts, and unique standpoints. Interdisciplinary chapters draw on significant historical and textual sources in three languages, namely Arabic, English, and Malay, to contribute to scholarship on education studies, international and comparative education, and international and development education.   Review    Review “This book is a thoughtful and timely contribution to scholarly literature showcasing the transformative agenda of current day education in Brunei, with an international outlook. Together the carefully selected chapters open new avenues and possibilities for future scholarship and offer opportunities for scholars to bring Brunei into the forefront of international debates on education.” ― Raqib Chowdhury, Senior Lecturer, Faculty of Education, Monash University, Australia "This is a welcomed edition that provides a comprehensive investigation into the Brunei education system in a critical and evidence-rich manner. The editors and authors not only marshal in-depth insights into the intricate workings of education reforms, teacher education and pedagogical approaches in general, but also furnish timely accounts of how the COVID-19 pandemic has impacted the Brunei education landscape and the actions that educators have put in place. The issues discussed are not only relevant to Brunei and Southeast Asia, but also speak to broader issues of education inequalities brought along by globalisation. As such, this edited volume provides an invaluable resource for scholars of international and comparative education studies, teacher education, migration and sociology of education research fields to develop a deep understanding of education in Southeast Asia and beyond." ― Cora Lingling Xu, Assistant Professor, Education, Durham University, UK "This book provides a fascinating account of the dynamics of globalisation, nation-building, education and reform in Brunei Darussalam. The book responds to the need for a comprehensive account of Brunei’s remarkable success in reforming its education system along the lines of its national philosophy, Malayu Islam Beraja (MIB), first officially proclaimed when the country achieved independence from Great Britain in 1984. The twenty chapters in the book, written by specialists on different aspects of Brunei’s education system, are organised around the four overlapping themes of history and culture, curriculum and pedagogy, teacher training, and education and society.  There has been no previous scholarly publication on the scale of this book about the education system in Brunei Darussalam. As well as throwing light on the system, the book provides a case study of how an education system built on Islamic thought can successfully negotiate contemporary social issues and the need to prepare students for global engagement." ― Martin Hayden, Emeritus Professor, Higher Education, Southern Cross University, Australia From the Back Cover This edited collection provides an in-depth examination of the education system, schooling, and teacher education in Brunei Darussalam in the context of globalization and reform. The accounts contained within this book present analyses and rich discussion of Brunei Darussalam’s historical, social, political, and cultural contexts that shape and i
