He was a member of the Executive Committee of the International Maritime Economic History Association (2008-12); Visiting Research Fellow of the Japan Foundation, I.D.E. (Tokyo), DAAD, British Academy, Leventis Foundation and Chapman Foundation (UK), and is author of The Liverpool of West Africa, other books, chapters in books and articles in journals of maritime, global, social, economic, transport and African history.   Daniel Castillo Hidalgo is Assistant Professor of Economic History at the University of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, Spain. He is a specialist on African maritime economic history and he is widely published on this theme and more broadly on the long-term configuration of port systems. He is also interested in the port communities and the way maritime activity impacts on regional social and economic structures.
