Description

This book provides an analysis of the European Parliament elections 2019 with a focus on East-Central European countries. The authors offer conceptual insights into Euroscepticism and discuss traditionally familiar concepts in a new light, pairing East-Central European Euroscepticism with visions of illiberal democracy, on the one hand, and showing the increasing Europeanisation of Eurosceptic parties in the region, on the other. The book combines a fresh and innovative conceptual treatment with rich and accurate empirical evidence in order to highlight the dynamics of Euroscepticism in "new" EU member states. Students and experts interested in EU politics, within academia and beyond, will find this volume particularly informative. Review “This highly informative volume shows that the numerous countries belonging to the CEE region present attitudes toward the EU that are more assorted than their straightforward grouping in one single category would probably suggest. It is therefore possible that their classification as one group of countries responds more to broad geopolitical considerations than to objective criteria about their interests and stance within the EU, in this sense the authors open a completely new perspective on EU studies and research on Euroscepticism.” (Nicolò Conti, Professor of Political Science, Unitelma Sapienza University of Rome, Italy)   “This book seamlessly weaves together a number of key issues in European politics: Euroscepticism, elections to the European Parliament, and party politics in Central and Eastern Europe. It is penetrating in its analysis and wide-ranging in its coverage of countries. Highly recommended for scholars of EU politics, party politics, Central and Eastern Europe, and electoral processes alike.” (Sebastiaan Princen, Associate Professor, Utrecht University, The Netherlands)   “Bringing together leading experts from the region, this book addresses key political developments in Central and Eastern Europe through the lens of the 2019 European Parliament elections. Thoroughly researched, this book provides a comprehensive overview of the rich diversity of the politics of the region. It demonstrates that, rather than a unified block, the countries of the region provide a plethora of contexts that need to be taken into account in order to understand the dynamics of European integration.” (Jan Rovný, Associate Professor, Sciences Po, Paris, France) From the Back Cover This book provides an analysis of the European Parliament elections 2019 with a focus on East-Central European countries.
