Description

This book offers the first comprehensive assessment of Heidegger’s account of affective phenomena. Affective phenomena play a significant role in Heidegger’s philosophy ― his analyses of mood significantly influenced diverse fields of research such as existentialism, hermeneutics, phenomenology, theology and cultural studies. Despite this, no single collection of essays has been exclusively dedicated to this theme.  Comprising twelve innovative essays by leading Heidegger scholars, this volume skilfully explores the role that not only Angst plays in Heidegger’s work, but also love and boredom. Exploring the nature of affective phenomena in Heidegger, as well as the role they play in wider philosophical debates, the volume is a valuable addition to Heideggerian scholarship and beyond, enriching current debates across disciplines on the nature of human agency. Review “This collection can be considered a major contribution to its own field, one that simultaneously invites further productive engagement with the theme from anyone interested in what Heidegger brings to bear on affects (be it from within the field or from without). The volume’s efficacy lies in seriously considering how affects are existentially pertinent to human beings, deepening the widely-held intuition that they are. For that reason, it is of considerable merit and should be of interest to many.” (Tijmen Lansdaal, Phenomenological Reviews, December 10, 2019) Review “Heidegger on Affect is a tremendously rewarding volume. Eminent Heidegger scholars and philosophers explore the intertwined dimensions of affective phenomena in clear language and from an impressive variety of perspectives. Some essays focus on Heidegger’s interpretation of affective phenomena at different stages in his thinking; others highlight Heidegger’s contribution to our understanding of the place of affect in epistemology, moral psychology, philosophy of mind, ethics, politics, and metaphysics. All repay close study.” (Steven Crowell, Professor of Philosophy, Rice University, USA) “Heidegger’s explorations of affect or “attunement” are an essential part of his challenge to predominant Western traditions. The alert and inquisitive essays in this collection show that Heidegger’s thoughts not only offer opportunities for deeper psychological insight, but also raise crucial questions about being, knowledge, ethics, and politics.” (Richard Polt, Professor of Philosophy, Xavier University, USA) From the Back Cover Heidegger’s explorations of affect or “attunement” are an essential part of his challenge to predominant Western traditions.
