About the Author Nathalie E. Williams is Associate Professor in the Department of Sociology and the Jackson School of International Studies at the University of Washington and Faculty Affiliate at UW's Center for Studies in Demography and Ecology, Center for Statistics in the Social Sciences, and the South Asia Center. She holds a doctorate in Sociology from the University of Michigan. Her publications on migration during armed conflict, climate change, and social change in general serve to advance theoretical scholarship on these topics and develop innovative measurement techniques for migration and armed conflict. Elwood D. Carlson is Charles Nam Professor in Sociology of Population at Florida State University and an Associate in FSU's Center for Demography and Population Health. Previously he was a research group leader and founding Dean of the International Max Planck Research School in Demography at the Max Planck Institute for Demographic Research in Rostock, Germany, and a Professor of Sociology at the University of South Carolina. He has published a previous monograph with Springer, The Lucky Few: Between the Greatest Generation and the Baby Boom (2008).
