Description

From the Back Cover This book examines the linkage between deviance and norm change in international politics. It draws on an original theoretical perspective grounded in the sociology of deviance to study the violations of norms and rules in the global nuclear non-proliferation regime. As such, this project provides a unique conceptual framework and applies it to highly salient issues in the contemporary international security environment. The theoretical/conceptual chapters are accompanied by three extensive case studies: Iran, North Korea, and India. Michal Smetana is Research Fellow and Assistant Professor at the Faculty of Social Sciences, Charles University and Coordinator of the newly-established Peace Research Center Prague, Czech Republic. Product Description This book examines the linkage between deviance and norm change in international politics. Review “Smetana’s book speaks to scholars interested in norm contestation, norm conflicts, and norm development…In his creative elaboration of a sophisticated, five-dimensional scheme of stigma politics, combined with his typology of contestation discourses, [this book] promises to be useful for scholars interested in other empirical fields of international relations as well.” (Harald Müller, Professor Emeritus, Peace Research Institute Frankfurt, Germany, and co-author of co-author of GreatPower Multilateralism and the Prevention of War)“Michal Smetana’s excellent new book elucidates, through the lens of nuclear weapons, how deviance works in the international system by deploying a novel interactionist account. This book is a must-read for anyone interested in how norms influence world politics, or simply understanding better the ways in which the international community dealt with Iran or North Korea.” (Michal Onderco, Assistant Professor, Erasmus University Rotterdam, the Netherlands, and author of Iran's Nuclear Program and the Global South)“This book offers cutting-edge research on norms by theorizing the (re-)construction of nuclear deviance and its impact on norm change. In times when the global nuclear order seems to be under a challenge from its former proponents, a perspective on the role of (potential) deviants in the shaping of that very order offers a missing piece necessary in order to fully capture norm dynamics in international politics. In addition, the book offers rich case studies on India, Iran, and North Korea.” (Carmen Wunderlich, Associate Fellow, University Duisburg-Essen, Germany, and co-author of Norm Dynamics in Multilateral Arms Control) About the Author Michal Smetana is Research Fellow and Assistant Professor at the Faculty of Social Sciences, Charles University and Coordinator of the newly-established Peace Research Center Prague, Czech Republic.
