Description

Product Description This book explores how community radio contributes to social change. Community radio remains a unique communication platform under digital capitalism, arguably capable of expanding the project of media democratisation. Yet there is a lack of in-depth analysis of community radio experience, and a dearth of understanding of its functionality as an actively transformative tool for greater equity in society. This project combines the theoretical positions of the political economy of communication with a citizen’s media perspective in order to interrogate community radio’s democratic potential. By presenting case studies of two radio stations in Melbourne and Lospalos, and applying multiple research methods, the book reveals community radio’s amplification of media participation, communication rights, counter-hegemony and media power ― in effect, its distinct regenerative voice. Review “Amid the large-scale incorporation of communication for social change within the hegemonic agenda of transnational capital, Juliet Fox offers us an anchor into imagining communication for social change at the radical margins. These radical margins, amid the global grand challenges of sustenance, inequality, poverty, climate change, and fascist politics, will emerge, I am confident, into the forefront of the contemporary social change struggles.” (Professor Mohan J. Dutta, Massey University, New Zealand) “Juliet Fox’s book provides an in-depth investigation of community radio’s role in a communication for social change program. Her position as researcher/producer with the radio stations she studies in Australia and Timor Leste ensures unique access to rich information, generating important new knowledge to the field. The book will be insightful for both media scholars and students wanting a deepening understanding of community radio in a global context.” (Dr Mia Lindgren, Monash University, Australia) From the Back Cover This book explores how community radio contributes to social change.
