De Geest van vrede bij Paulus: Een studie in Bijbelse Theologie bespreekt de centrale rol van vrede in het Nieuwe Testament, met bijzondere aandacht voor de geschriften van Paulus, en betoogt dat deze vrede een werk van de Geest is. De gekozen methodologie is retorische, discours- en sociale analyse. Het proefschrift laat zien dat het belangrijkste probleem waar Paulus mee te maken had onopgeloste conflicten waren, met andere woorden gebrek aan vrede met God en tussen groepen en individuen in de Paulinische gemeenten. Εἰρήνη wordt voorgesteld als het belangrijkste doel van communicatie, niet alleen in de Paulinische literatuur, maar ook in de niet-Paulinische documenten van het Nieuwe Testament. Πνεῦμα vestigt, onderhoudt en intensiveert harmonieuze relaties. De aard van deze relaties is εἰρήνη. Hoewel elke letter contingent is en in verschillende omstandigheden is ontstaan, wordt εἰρήνη door πνεῦμα zo gerealiseerd dat de precieze omstandigheden en problemen een oplossing vinden die zowel de eeuwigheid als de huidige relatie met God en de medegelovige op het oog heeft. Verzoening met God in Christus door de Geest leidt tot een leven van vrede met God en moet ook leiden tot een leven van vrede met mensen door het transformerende werk van de Geest. Het beginpunt in Galaten, hoofdstuk twee van de scriptie, en Romeinen, hoofdstuk drie, is Paulus' groet. Er wordt gesuggereerd dat dit niet zomaar een eenvoudige begroeting was, maar een onderdeel van de πρόθεσις en daarmee een aanwijzing voor het hoofddoel van het schrijven. Het belangrijkste probleem in Galaten en Romeinen wordt uitgelegd als conflicten, gebrek aan εἰρήνη. Dit probleem wordt opgelost door πνεῦμα, maar vereist de actieve medewerking van de gelovige in Christus. Hoofdstuk vier suggereert dat ook in de andere onbetwiste brieven van Paulus εἰρήνη het hoofddoel van het schrijven is en dat πνεῦμα een essentiële rol speelt in de realisatie ervan. Hoofdstuk vijf stelt voor dat de betwiste Paulinische brieven en de niet-Paulinische documenten van het Nieuwe Testament hetzelfde principe volgen, hoewel ze πνεῦμα minder vaak gebruiken. In de evangeliën en Handelingen voerde Jezus de messiaanse bediening uit door de kracht van de Geest om zijn vredesmissie te volbrengen en dit werd voortgezet door zijn discipelen na de opstanding en de intensievere ervaring van de Geest met Pinksteren. De niet-Paulinische brieven drukken hetzelfde essentiële idee uit als de Paulinische brieven, namelijk dat vrede door de Geest tot stand wordt gebracht wanneer het volk van God streeft naar harmonieuze relaties en actief deelneemt aan het oplossen van conflicten. Deze vrede is voorwaardelijk en vereist een positieve menselijke reactie op Gods aanbod van vrede en een voortdurende wandel door de Geest om ook in harmonieuze relaties met mensen te leven.
