D'origine polonaise, Roman Cieslewicz (1930-1994) est un acteur majeur du graphisme en France dans les années 1960-1970. Formé à l'école des Beaux-Arts de Cracovie, il s'installe à Paris en 1963 pour fuir la dictature, apportant avec lui l'esthétique de l'école polonaise de l'affiche. Graphiste infatigable et véritable banque d'images à lui seul, il s'emploie à refléter son temps à travers une esthétique minimaliste et percutante, influencée par les mouvements d'avant-garde du début du XXe siècle. L'oeuvre de Cieslewicz, d'une grande diversité, rassemble travaux de commande et projets personnels : affiches pour le cinéma, le théâtre, les expositions du Centre Pompidou, mises en pages pour Elle, Vogue ou encore L'Autre Journal, photomontages, collages, couvertures de livres pour le Seuil, Hazan, 18/18 ou encore les Guides bleus? Inquiet de l'uniformisation visuelle croissante dans les médias, qui vide de leur signification des représentations pourtant violentes, il choisit soigneusement des images pour les associer et les confronter. Le lecteur découvrira deux livres réunis sous un emballage en carton sérigraphié : un livre consacré au travail préparatoire de Cieslewicz (esquisses, maquettes) et un autre présentant ses réalisations finales. Le tout est organisé sous la forme d'un abécédaire, de A comme affiche à Z comme zoom. Les textes sont écrits par des contemporains de Cieslewicz, qui l'ont côtoyé, ainsi que par des historiens de l'art, du graphisme ou de la photographie actuels. Les très nombreuses illustrations sont largement extraites du fonds d'archives constitué par l'artiste lui-même. Exceptionnel par l'ampleur de son contenu et par sa forme, ce livre de référence invite à plonger dans la démarche même de Cieslewicz lorsqu'il fabriquait ses images.
