Ce dernier a fisse son nom à un outil bien connu, le lemme de Haire, qui permet d'établir des résultats existence avec simplicité et élégance. Mais les travaux de René Balte, et en particulier son rand théorème de caractérisation des limites simples de suites de fonctions continues, ont ouvert la voie vers un domaine immense. Le présent livre vous invite à une promenade dans champ de recherche toujours en progrès. Pour profiter pleinement de sa lecture, il est préférable de posséder une certaine maturité mathématique, une bonne pratique de la topologie et des espaces fonctionnels, du niveau de celle que l'on acquiert en fin de deuxième année d'université ou en cours de troisième année. Dans une discipline qui ne manque pas de géants, Gilles Godefroy, mieux que tout autre sans doute, pouvait offrir une semblable synthèse, à la fois progressive et complète. Travaillant puis près d'un demi-siècle en analyse fonctionnelle, il est l'un des spécialistes mondialement reconnus des méthodes développées dans cet ouvrage. Que l'on veuille découvrir univers Baire-mesurable, qui suffit à toutes les mathématiques applicables, ou que l'on vienne à s'interroger à son sujet, à en détecter et à en utiliser les uniformités cachées, le présent livre arrive à point nommé. L'auteur nous y apprend à contempler le coeur d'un espace topologique, après avoir procédé à l'épluchage de ses éléments superflus ! On comprendra alors comment les jeux conduisent à des dichotomies, ou comment construire les cadres qui permettent de simplifier démonstrations et calculs. Chemin faisant, ce livre conduira progressivement ses lecteurs au seuil de la recherche contemporaine. Car, outre la catégorie de Baire, les fonctions Baire-mesurables et leurs applications, l'ouvrage initie à l'usage des ordinaux dans les domaines les plus " concrets u de l'analyse. De nombreux exercices accompagnés d'indications figurent dans le livre et feront certainement le régal de plus d'un agrégatif ambitieux. Ils sont d'une difficulté très modérée au regard de la profondeur du contenu, et ont pour but davantage l'assimilation des notions que l'entrainement à la recherche, entrainement que les onze chapitres offrent à profusion.
