Les champignons ne sont pas des plantes, les algues bleues non plus. Mais qu'est-ce qu'une plante, qu'est-ce qu'un champignon ? Pourquoi l'oïdium n'est-il plus un champignon et pourquoi la gueule-de-loup ne fait-elle plus partie des Scrophulariacées ? Cet ouvrage répond à ces questions et à bien d'autres. Il se donne deux objectifs principaux : offrir une vue large et moderne des plantes et des champignons selon l'arbre phylogénétique actuel des Eucaryotes, et décrire un choix de familles de plantes à fleurs des flores tropicales et tempérées, dans une séquence correspondant à la classification actuelle, et basée sur les résultats les plus récents de la phylogénie moléculaire (APGIII). La première partie présente la nomenclature, l'histoire des classifications, les notions d'espèce, les processus de spéciation et d'évolution, ainsi que l'origine et la diversité des flores et des types de végétations. La seconde partie s'attache à l'évolution des groupes antérieurs à l'apparition des plantes à fleurs, avec une introduction à la phylogénie et à la systématique des groupes majeurs de champignons et d'algues. Les chapitres suivants traitent des bryophytes, fougères, gymnospermes et angiospermes. Les familles décrites sont richement illustrées et un glossaire complète l'ouvrage. Cette nouvelle édition, entièrement mise à jour et considérablement augmentée, s'adresse principalement aux étudiants en biologie, pharmacie ou sciences de l'environnement, ainsi qu'aux chercheurs intéressés par une vision moderne de la systématique des plantes et des champignons ; elle comblera également les botanistes et naturalistes amateurs à la recherche d'un ouvrage de référence. Cet ouvrage représente la somme des enseignements universitaires dispensés par les enseignants-chercheurs des Conservatoire et Jardin botaniques de la Ville de Genève, co-auteurs de ce livre.
